Quarter of electric blankets checked are unsafe

by Conrad Murray last modified 20-12-2007 07:00

More than a quarter of electric blankets tested in Bath and North East Somerset were found to be unsafe.

Residents were invited to have their blankets tested at one of four locations by trading standards officers and Avon Fire and Rescue Service.

A trading standards spokesman said just because a blanket may be working, it did not mean it was safe: "Many people do not realise the blankets deteriorate badly over time," Roger Pope added.

Faults seen included exposed elements, loose connections, worn flex and scorch marks.

A spokesman for the British Retail Consortium, which represents a range of retailers from large multiples to independents, said: "You should always buy a new blanket from a reputable retailer and ensure it has the British Standards Mark. People should carefully follow the manufacturers' instructions for use and maintenance during its life."

The testing sessions were held at Bath and Keynsham Fire Stations, the Somer Centre at Midsomer Norton and the Moravian Hall at the Free Church at Weston, Bath.

Ninety-seven blankets were tested, of which 27 failed. Further testing is on offer in the New Year. Appointments can be made by calling the council's trading standards on 01225 396753.
