Karen Smith, 26, was dismissed as a trainee sales administrator with automatic door firm Premier Systems (Scotland) Ltd on 11 March last year. A Glasgow employment tribunal ruled that her dismissal because of pregnancy was unfair.

John Conti injured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the October 2000 accident while a senior house officer at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, west London. He required reconstructive surgery soon after and has now made a good recovery.

Miners had sought to bring a "group action" against claims company Vendside - part of the Union of Democratic Mineworkers - to court over allegedly unfair legal fee charges. Victims of the 7 July London bombings are to receive increased compensation after criticism about the amounts being offered. The Home Office said an extra £2.5m would be available due to the "exceptional nature" of the attacks. The government has already paid out more than £2m to victims. The additional compensation, which could double some victim's payments, will be distributed before the first anniversary of the bombings. Details of how the money will be awarded will be announced next week.

Mr Reid told MPs he would invite bereaved families of the 52 victims to meetings so he could explain to them personally his reasoning. An Army recruit whose career was ended because of a broken ankle has been ordered to pay back £115,000 damages because she was over-compensated. Jennifer Brown, 32, was awarded almost £258,000 after she was forced to quit the Royal Signals Regiment in 1998. But a hearing at the Court of Appeal in London ruled the compensation had been miscalculated after hearing evidence from the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Insurers have challenged the judgement favouring bereaved families and workers who contracted mesothelioma at work.
