After four years of secrecy, the Pentagon handed over documents Friday that contain the names of detainees held at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay. The release resulted from a victory by The Associated Press in a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit.

Three British residents detained by the United States at Guantanamo Bay will ask the High Court for orders requiring Foreign Secretary Jack Straw to petition for their release. Lawyers for the three and their families argue that allegations of torture being practised at the detention facility in Cuba mean the British Government is obliged to act on their behalf.

Representations will be made to US authorities over a UK resident held at Guantanamo Bay, a QC acting for the government has told the High Court. Christopher Greenwood QC said facts in Bisher al-Rawi's case made the foreign secretary decide on "a specific, security-related request" to the US. Mr al-Rawi, Jamil el-Banna and Omar Deghayes have asked the court to force Jack Straw to press for their release.

Four former Guantanamo Bay detainees have been given the right to bring a lawsuit against the US government for violating their religious beliefs. The suit has been brought by the so-called Tipton Three, Shafiq Rasul, Asif Iqbal and Rhuhel Ahmed and Jamal Al-Harith, from Manchester. They claim they were forced to shave off their beards and were harassed as they worshipped in the camp in Cuba.
