Australian in court over Edinburgh traffic cone incident

A 29-year-old Australian has appeared in court following an incident in which an Irish student was injured by a falling traffic cone in Edinburgh.

Kate Flannery, 23, from Salthill in Galway city, suffered spinal injuries when the cone fell on her.

Andrew Smith, of Buccleuch Terrace in Edinburgh, was charged with culpable and reckless conduct when he appeared at the city's sheriff court. Mr Smith had handed himself into the police on Monday.

The cone fell from George IV Bridge onto Merchant Street at 0340 GMT on Sunday.

The injured Queen Margaret University College student was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary before later being transferred to the city's Western General Hospital. Ms Flannery was then moved to Glasgow's Southern General Hospital where her family are at her bedside.

Mr Smith is accused of culpably throwing the traffic marker over the bridge and hitting Ms Flannery to her severe injury, permanent impairment and danger of life.

Sheriff Donald MacLeod remanded Smith in custody pending further inquiries. He will be released on bail as soon as his passport has been surrendered to the court.
