Samurai sword death was 'accidental' says Devon man

by Conrad Murray last modified 27-09-2006 04:15

A Devon man accused of using a Samurai sword to murder a man after a row at a nightclub has told a court the death was an accident.

Bradley Moran, 24, of Vale Cottage, Newtown, Sidmouth, caused a wound which penetrated Matthew Stiling's heart. Mr Moran, who denies murder, told Truro Crown Court his movement to stab Mr Stiling was instinctive, when he thought he was going to be attacked.

Mr Stiling, 33, died from his injuries in July last year. The court heard Mr Moran had witnessed an argument at Carina's nightclub between his father Eamon and Matthew Stiling's brother Jason. The incident was broken up, but a fight between the two almost took place in the street outside.

Mr Moran said his father told him to go home and get the Samurai swords out as a group containing the Matthew and Jason Stiling was approaching. Mr Moran told the court he had the sword by his side when three of the group came towards him,

He said: "I spun round and I felt the sword go in. I didn't realise how badly injured he was."

The trial continues.
