Negligence: one in five nail bars are a health hazard

by Murdo Maguire last modified 09-09-2006 08:40

One in five nail bars are a health hazard leaving customers with infected fingers or ripped nails, experts warned yesterday.

Dirty salons and poorly trained nail technicians who regularly botch jobs are increasing.

It follows a spot check of 45 nail bars in Bristol, where some customers were left with their nails hanging off.

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health's conference in Bournemouth also heard one fifth of salons failed to employ properly-qualified staff.

Director of policy Ian Foulkes said: "To protect against the dangers of quality training is essential. Complaints about infected nails are rising."
