New age laws spur discrimination enquiries

by Conrad Murray last modified 16-11-2006 07:00

More than 100 people have contacted the Equality Commission for advice about the new age discrimination laws introduced six weeks ago.

Some inquiries came from men and women who felt they were discriminated against at work because of their age. Others came from employers seeking advice about the law.

The commission said employers should ensure their policies complied with the new laws to avoid workers taking cases against them.

Age discrimination is to be the subject of a conference hosted by the commission to be held later in Belfast. The conference will provide guidance for employers and workers.

Chief Commissioner Bob Collins described the new protection afforded to workers through the legislation as "ground-breaking":

"We are pleased with the level of awareness and the number of advice calls we have received to date," he said. "It takes people a while to get to grips with any new law. This law is complex and far-reaching and the guidance we are launching is designed to help employers understand their responsibilities and ensure that their policies, practices and procedures fully comply with the law."
