£1.25m for victim support
Support groups for victims of sexual abuse are to be awarded grants from a £1.25m Home Office fund. Womankind, a Bristol-based charity for sexual abuse victims and counselling service Kinergy, based in south Gloucestershire will each get £30,000. The money will allow both organisations to improve their services.
Last year Bristol had more than double the national average of reported sexual assaults. Survivors Swindon, which was established to help male adult survivors of sexual abuse, will also receive £30,000. The Gloucestershire Rape Crisis Centre has been awarded £10,000.
Home Office Minister Gerry Sutcliffe said: "This funding will help to ensure that victims of these terrible offences have timely access to advice, information, care and counselling that meets their individual needs."
Kyra Bond, Womankind's Manager added: "We are pleased to have been awarded this grant which will help provide a dedicated outreach service to support survivors of rape and sexual abuse."
Steve Bevan of the Survivors Swindon said: "We are pleased to have been awarded this grant. It will provide increased support for male survivors in therapy sessions, and will allow us to set up support for partners and families of male survivors."
