A seven-year-old boy from Devon is being treated in a specialist burns unit after setting fire to himself with a lighter. It is thought he and two friends were playing in a park in the Crownhill area of Plymouth, when his football shirt caught light.

The boy sustained 16% burns to his chest and has been transferred to a hospital in Bristol. A passer-by who helped to put out the flames suffered superficial burns. The injured child is a pupil at Widey Court Primary School.

Deputy head teacher Heidi Price said children at the school had been upset by the accident. She told BBC News: "We've interviewed the children who witnessed the accident to find out exactly what happened. We've given them support and advice and obviously we want to offer support and advice to the family involved."

Ms Price said the entire school would be given fire safety advice to ensure children were aware of the dangers.
