Marine injury: Jet ski passenger's leg ripped off by speedboat propeller

by Murdo Maguire last modified 10-07-2006 09:38

A man lost his right leg and part of the left after becoming trapped between a speedboat and a jet ski at the weekend. He was a passenger on the jet ski but was trying to climb on to the boat when his legs were caught in a propeller.

The 40-year-old man, from Southampton, was one of a group of seven taking part in water sports near Hythe Marina, Southampton Water, on Saturday afternoon. The jet ski and the speedboat had been travelling up and down the coast and were heading into the marina for fuel.

A Hampshire police spokesman said: "As they entered Hythe Marina the passenger entered the water. He then swam towards the rear of the boat and attempted to climb on to the rear deck. The engines were running and the propellers were turning and it would appear the person's legs were drawn under by the propellers."

A helicopter took the man to Southampton General Hospital where he was in a serious condition last night.

Colin Griffiths, from the Solent Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre, said: "The scale of the injuries is rare in our experience."
