Online knee advice clinic launched
A 24-hour advice clinic for knee pain and injuries has been launched on the internet by Lothian physiotherapists. The pilot service, which is said to be the first of its kind in the world, will run for a year, offering help to patients around the world. It will operate in addition to normal physiotherapy services provided in Edinburgh and the Lothians.
The website was set up by Angela Lindsay and Wendy Johnson, who said it offered a personalised service. Ms Johnson, NHS Lothian clinical specialist physiotherapist said: "It started off as a small idea and just evolved from there. We are keen to look at how more people could access physiotherapy at a time and place to suit each individual, as well as looking at ways of improving the quality and effectiveness of our service.
"The website has been designed to carry out careful, selective screening to ensure only those with knee problems will be able to access the advice from within the site. Those people identified with more serious knee injuries such as fractures are directed to seek further assessment by a qualified health professional."
If successful, the concept could be rolled out to include other joints and common problems.
Brian Cavanagh, chairman at NHS Lothian said: "This is yet another innovative idea from our staff to improve access and information for patients about knee injuries. It's a fantastic idea and the website provides really useful help and advice. The talents and skills of our staff have led to the development of this pilot service which encourages patients to manage their own symptoms and speed up their recovery."
