The Government will not take on the £15 billion cost of compensating 85,000 people who were misled about the safety of their final salary pension schemes, Tony Blair has told MPs. He flatly rejected the damning verdict of Ann Abraham, the Parliamentary Ombudsman, that official leaflets issued by ministers had failed to warn workers that their occupational pension schemes would be at risk if their firms collapsed.
