Acupuncture offers relief from chronic neck pain, while there is little reliable evidence on the effectiveness of massage, according to two new systematic reviews. Acupuncture does not “cure” neck pain, and relief appears to last only a few weeks or months. Patients may thus need periodic booster treatments, says lead study author Kien Trinh, M.D., of McMaster University in Canada.

Problems with walking and balance may be the first sign of Alzheimer's disease, say US researchers. A study of 2,288 elderly people found that such physical symptoms were associated with an increased risk of developing dementia. Researchers from the University of Washington said they believed that exercise could help to stall the progression of the disease. Their study appears in Archives of Internal Medicine.

A 24-hour advice clinic for knee pain and injuries has been launched on the internet by Lothian physiotherapists. The pilot service, which is said to be the first of its kind in the world, will run for a year, offering help to patients around the world. It will operate in addition to normal physiotherapy services provided in Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Northern Ireland's first specialised brain injury unit has been officially opened. The new £9m facility is based at Musgrave Park Hospital near Belfast. The Regional Acquired Brain Injury Unit will offer treatment and rehabilitation for patients under one roof. Speech therapy will also be provided.
