Chester-le-Street road accident paralysis victim is awarded over £2m

by Murdo Maguire last modified 12-05-2006 08:11

A teenage girl who was paralysed in a road accident has been awarded £2.2m. Ashleigh Cowen, 16, from Chester-le-Street, was struck by a British Telecom van as she got off a school bus in the town in 2002. She also suffered severe brain damage and can now only communicate by blinking her eyes.

Following the settlement at Newcastle High Court on Thursday her family said they would use the money to fund 24-hour care for Ashleigh.

A British Telecom spokesperson said: "Both parties had reached agreement on the matter of liability some time ago. "BT is pleased for Ashleigh and for her family that today's court judgement has made an award in accordance with what has been agreed, and brings all legal proceedings to a conclusion."

Ashleigh needed 18 months of medical treatment before she was able to return to her specially-adapted home. Her family also plans to use the money to buy a computer to track her eye movements and help her communicate in more detail.
