by Murdo Maguire last modified 02-01-2007 06:47

A 41-year-old cyclist has died after being found next to a road junction in Greater Manchester.

The man, who has not been named but comes from the Hindley area, was found in Wigan at 0730 GMT on Monday, together with his bike. The cyclist was taken to hospital suffering from serious injuries but died a short time later.

Police are appealing for anyone who was near Darlington Street and its junction with Warrington Lane to get in touch. The road was closed for a short period of time while investigations were carried out. The man was wearing a cycling helmet, a yellow coat, black waterproof trousers and boots.

At this stage it is not certain whether he was involved in a collision with another vehicle.
