Horse and trap man dies in Durham crash

by Murdo Maguire last modified 21-04-2006 10:45

A man driving a horse-drawn carriage was killed when his vehicle was hit from behind by a car in County Durham. Terrance Wood, of Coundon, Co Durham, was driving his four-wheel trap along the A689 when he was hit from behind by a Nissan Micra car on Thursday evening. The impact caused him to crash into a trap in front being driven by 14-year-old Lewis Wood.

Mr Wood, 40, died in the crash and the driver of the car, a Stockton woman, was treated for shock. Lewis Wood was taken to the children's intensive care unit at Newcastle General Hospital suffering from a fractured pelvis and concussion. One of the horses was put down following the incident.

Durham Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them.
