Molten metal spill at Scunthorpe steel plant
A container carrying 250 tonnes of molten metal has cracked at the Corus steelworks in Scunthorpe.
Forty firefighters spent four hours at the site on Tuesday night before handing over to Corus safety staff. No-one was injured in the incident, which was the third accident at the plant in the last three months.
On 20 December, parts of a blast furnace fell on five workers just a week after fire crews had attended fires caused by a molten iron spill.
A spokeswoman for the Corus plant in Scunthorpe said on Wednesday that safety was "the top priority" for the company. She said Corus's on-site staff had worked well with the fire brigade to contain the spillage near one of the plant's cooling towers.
