by Conrad Murray last modified 08-09-2006 07:59

Two British women are among four people who were killed when a coach crashed into a lorry on a motorway in Spain, the Foreign Office has confirmed.

The coach, carrying 31 passengers - 16 from the UK - was travelling from Faro in Portugal to Seville, when the accident happened on the A-49.

Katherine Roberts, 50, from Pontypool, Torfaen and Karen Murray, 33, from Glasgow died with two German tourists. All but one of 14 injured Britons taken to hospital were later released.

Mrs Roberts' husband Gareth, 51, remains in hospital after the crash near Seville.

The bus was on an excursion from Faro. Police said much of the side of the bus had been ripped off on impact. The lorry had broken down and pulled over to the hard shoulder.

Next of kin have been informed, a Foreign Office spokeswoman said. "The majority of people have been taken back to their hotels and are being looked after by their tour operator," she added. We are in very close contact with the tour operator and we have been providing consular assistance. The majority have indicated that they are going to continue with their holiday."

Spanish Police are now investigating the accident.

The Foreign Office helpline for those who may be concerned about family members, is 020 7008 1500.
