Off-duty police officer dies in North Wales wakeboarding accident

by Murdo Maguire last modified 18-07-2006 04:45

A serving officer with North Wales Police has died after being towed by a water bike off a beach near Caernarfon.

He was on a wakeboard being towed by a water bike at Dinas Dinlle beach at about 1700 BST on Monday when the driver saw he had fallen into the sea. He was brought to the shore and an ambulance took him to Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

North Wales Police said the incident is not being treated as a criminal matter. The force added that more details will be released once all the officer's relatives are informed. He was said to have been at the beach with family and friends when the incident happened.

Wakeboarding is a surface water sport similar to water skiing but with a single board instead of skis.
