Inquiry told of Eyemouth fairground death

by Murdo Maguire last modified 16-04-2007 19:33

A fatal accident inquiry has heard how a fairground worker died less than three hours after being struck by a ride he was operating in Eyemouth.

James Laidler, 17, of Widdrington near Morpeth, lost his footing on the Swinging Jims ride last August. Eyewitnesses described how he was dragged underneath the machine at Killie Draughts before other fairground workers went to his aid.

Two teenage girls who were on the ride described how Mr Laidler was pulled under before being helped out by colleagues. He was then taken by car to Berwick Infirmary before being transferred by ambulance to Wansbeck General Hospital.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital - with internal bleeding and crush injuries believed to have been the cause.

The two-day inquiry at Duns Sheriff Court continues.
