Liverpool building site crane collapses leaving man dead

A man died and another was seriously injured when a crane collapsed on a building site in Liverpool city centre.

Emergency crews were called to Dukes Terrace near Colquitt Street at around 1600 GMT on Monday. The driver of the crane - which dropped 130ft (39.6m) - was cut free before being taken to the Royal Liverpool Hospital. His condition is stable. It is understood the dead man, who has not been named, was working below the crane when it collapsed.

Fire service spokesman James Berry said: "The cab dropped into a building and the driver was trapped. Rescue teams retrieved him from the cab and he was taken to hospital."

The 31-year-old man suffered injuries to his arm, back and shoulder.

Two Health and Safety Executive inspectors were at the scene and a joint investigation with Merseyside Police has begun.
