Two hurt as chemicals explode in Oxford lab experiment

by Murdo Maguire last modified 19-01-2007 08:46

Two people were injured by flying glass when chemicals exploded during an experiment at a university lab.

The explosion happened at the Oxford University chemistry research laboratory in South Parks Road on Wednesday afternoon. Fifteen firefighters and an environmental protection unit attended the incident, but students had the fire under control when crews arrived. The two men who suffered cuts in the blast needed hospital treatment.

Julian Green, of Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue, said: "Before our fire crews arrived, the students had used dry powder extinguishers to put out the small fire that occurred as a result of the explosion. Their quick thinking prevented the fire from spreading. It's important to use extreme caution when carrying out chemical experiments and protective covers and fume cabinets should be used at all times."
